Honeymoon trends among jet setters have changed over the years. Stays in European castles and Caribbean tropical islands are a thing of the past. Today's couples are seeking new ways to celebrate their union as well as new destinations. You can't go wrong in seeking Malaysia as a honeymoon destination given the current strength of the US dollar against the ringgit and so many beautiful locations in the country to choose from. Whatever your taste, here are Malaysia's top ten honeymoon spots, as in the opinion of the writer.

No 1. Pangkor Laut Island, Perak
"I almost cried when I saw how beautiful God has made this paradise." So said world-famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti of Pangkor Laut Island, who performed at the opening of the island's exclusive resort in 1994. Then, in 1999, Conde Naste magazine voted this privately owned retreat as one of the top ten in the world. The island's Emerald Bay, with its superb sands and water, is a pure paradise for couples to swim and sunbathe. The beach is also where Spencer Chapman made his escape in a submarine from the Japanese during World War II, as recounted in his best-selling novel "The Jungle Is Neutral." The waters of Coral Beach are an underwater splendour with its magnificent coral reefs, while Royal Bay is perfect for windsurfing. Luxurious chalets on the island are a mix of Malay and Balinese architecture, and are romantically set out into the sea or on the hillside. Couples can expect only the best facilities to pamper them, such as jacuzzi, sauna, spa and posh restaurants. Pangkor Laut Island is a forty-minute boat ride from the coastal town of Lumut in Perak State. If money is no object, you can charter an airplane to land on neighbouring Pangkor Island and from there take a 15-minute boat ride across.

No. 2 Tioman Island, Pahang
In 1970, Time magazine ranked Tioman Island as one of the best ten "desert island escapes" in the world. A volcanic outcrop with several settlements, Tioman boasts of a landscape that is indeed spectacular. Lush jungles from its central mountain creep down to the white-coral, sandy beaches hugging the shores, while in the south, the twin peaks of Nenek Si Mukut and Batu Sirau rise to the clouds. Nearby, the Mukut Waterfall cascades down a granite peak. Lovers will be spoiled for choice in selecting a beach for themselves. For quiet strolls, there are trails leading from Tekek, the main settlement, northward to Salang and southward to Genting. For soft adventure, take the cross-island trail from Tekek to Juara on the east coast. Tioman is also a premier diving and snorkelling destination, and there are PADI dive centres in many hotels. For a romantic evening, enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the sea-front restaurants beneath casuarinas in the villages. A five-star hotel in Tekek allows couples to indulge in the pleasures of life.

No. 3 Langkawi Island, Kedah
On the fabled island of Langkawi, there are many areas where lovers can find ultimate peace and privacy. Two favourite enclaves for honeymooners are Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu. The former is tucked in the northwest corner of Langkawi, and is home to two sophisticated resorts overflowing with luxury, such as spas and décor of volcanic rock. There are exclusive beaches for guests, and from the hotel balcony, newlyweds can admire the awe-inspiring view of the jewel-like sea towards Thailand. Twenty kilometres away, Tanjung Rhu (meaning "Casuarina Bay") is set in a white-sand cove sheltered by a promontory. It offers many romantic settings for couples to enjoy. Fantastic beaches look out to the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. At low tide, couples can stroll to the islands of Pulau Pasir and Pulau Gasing. In the nearby mangrove swamp, eagles can be fed by hand. To shop like mad for your new home, pop over to Kuah, where there are lots of duty-free bargains.

No. 4 Batu Ferringhi, Penang
Batu Ferringhi, on the northern coastline of Penang Island is a honeymoon classic. The name means "Foreigner's Rock" and alludes to the visits by important personalities in historical times. Portuguese admiral Alfonso D'Albuquerque stopped at Batu Ferringhi in 1511 before sailing southward to conquer Malacca; St. Francis Xavier made a stopover in 1545; and Captain James Lancaster, founder of the East India Company, came ashore in 1600. Today, honeymooners can choose from sophisticated resorts, action-packed nightlife or exciting watersports along this stretch of beautiful and vibrant beach. On a clear day, take in the sight of a rock outcrop aptly named Lovers Isle. Or browse in the many art galleries and antique shops. When the sun has set, enjoy a delicious ikan bakar (grilled fish) dinner in the alfresco restaurants or snap up some trinkets from the bustling sidewalk bazaar. For sightseeing, take a memorable stroll through the labyrinth of alleys and stress in the old quarter of Georgetown, where history peeps from every nook and cranny.

No. 5 Cameron Highlands, Pahang
For the outdoorsy couple, Cameron Highlands is an excellent destination for a cool and quiet honeymoon. Malaysia's premier hill resort, Cameron Highlands is located between 4,900 to 5,900 metres above sea level on the rugged Titiwangsa Range. Romantic places are plentiful. Stroll through rose gardens or nurseries with brightly coloured flowers. Feed your loved one fresh strawberries! Enjoy scones and hot tea with a breathing taking view of the terraced slopes of tea estates. Easy-to-walk trails branch to the nearby hills from Tanah Rata, the main township, to permit bird-watching opportunities. At night, you can choose to curl up by a roaring fireside in a Tudor cottage or enjoy a piping hot steamboat dinner. Four-star hotels are available. Access to Cameron Highlands by a winding road from Tapah (in Perak State) takes slightly more than an hour.

No. 6 Santubong Peninsula, Sarawak
Located 35 km from Kuching, the capital of Sarawak State, Santubong Peninsula provides a unique blend of beautiful beaches and interesting cultural sights. Damai Beach, with Gunung Santubong rising 810 metres to provide a sentimental backdrop, is simply stunning. Five- and four-star hotels mollycoddle honeymooners, who can be as active or sedentary as they so desire. They can enjoy a memorable river cruise up the Salak River. Or watch a dramatic sunrise with the conical peak of Santubong to one side and fishing boats and islands on the other. For sightseeing, go on a tour of Sarawak Cultural Village at the foot of Santubung. This is a "living museum:" with live-in residents from the major ethnic groups who demonstrate handicraft making and living skills in their traditional houses.

Tanjung Aru is a dazzling white beach of par excellence, which is only fifteen minutes' drive from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah State. There are plenty of activities to keep newlyweds occupied. Go horse-back riding on the beach. Stroll hand-in-hand in the charming Prince Philip Park. Take a sunset cruise around the offshore islands aboard a Bugis schooner or go deep-sea fishing in the South China Sea. Enjoy a glass-bottom boat trip to Tuanku Abdul Rahman Park to see coral reefs that are beautiful beyond imagination. No. 8 Redang Island, Terengganu
A quintessential tropical paradise, Redang Island gives lovers a chance to do as little as possible or seek the thrills of its underwater Gardens of Eden. Winner of Tourism Malaysia's "Best Tourist Attraction Award 1994/5", Redang has both four- and three-star hotels as well as an 18-hole golf course. Diving is spectacular. The wrecks of World War II warships H.M.S. Prince of Wales and H.M.S. Repulse are found in the crystal clear waters around Redang. Couples can turn sun-worshippers on the lovely Pasir Panjang Beach. The nearby islets of Pulau Pinang and Pulau Ekor Tebu provide excellent snorkelling. Redang Island is located 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, capital of Terengganu State.

No. 9 Cherating, Pahang
Once a back-packers' paradise, Cherating has its own unique personality. Its endless palm-shaded beach is dotted with quaint huts of fisherfolk. The rustic atmosphere soothes the senses and the villagers are extremely friendly. The cottage industry is active, and honeymooners can create their own batik or learn the art of weaving pandanus leaves into hats and baskets. A special attraction is to share a unique experience of watching green turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs at Pantai Chendor during the breeding season from July to September. The jewel in the crown of Cherating is Club Mediterranee but luxury four-star hotels are also available. Cherating is located 30km north of Kuantan, capital of Pahang State.

No. 10 Genting Highlands, Pahang
Perched atop the misty Ulu Kali Mountains at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres high, Genting Highlands offers Las-Vegas-cum-Disneyland style of entertainment. I grew up in Chicago always thinking my brother, Art Sares, was one of the greatest trombonist ever. He had been compared to Tommy Dorsey as one of the great lyrical trombone players of the world. While clearly there is family bias at play here, he was indeed a special player and that's documented but this piece is not about him. I had my own favorites as well, and growing up in the 50's, I leaned toward the West Coast jazz scene with its laid back, swinging feel. This "Cool" jazz was soothing to my ears, though I admit to sometimes listening to some pretty good Hard Bop stuff as well, particularly Gene Ammons. Of course, the Bird prevailed. Shorty Rogers' music and arrangements, in particular, resonated and the sounds of Bud Shank's alto and John Graas's French horn were something to behold. While my friends were listening to Fats Domino, Bill Haley, and Peggy Lee, I was digging June Christy, Anita O'day, J.J. Johnson, Herb Ellis, Hampton Hawes, Jimmy Giuffre, Conte and Pete Condoli, Curtiss Counce, Gerry Mulligan, Shelly Manne, Bob Brookmeyer and all the rest. Of course I was weaned on Woody's Third Herd and Stan Kenton's big bands. Hell, I remember Kenton's scary background music in "Blackboard Jungle" and Shorty's driving work throughout the "Wild One." "Blues for Brando" is a cult classic. You might say I was before my time...

But there was one guy whose playing stopped me in my tracks. His name was Frank Rosolino, one of the finest trombone players ever and, as many have attested to, one very sweet man....one of the best-loved on the jazz scene. He was a hip jokester with a great wit. He literally bubbled with laughter, energy and mischief. But on the horn, he was all business. He had a full sound, great technique, great ideas (my God could he improvise), and a deep lyricism. As J.J. Johnson once said, "Frank Rosolino was a towering genius and a trombone virtuoso of the jazz genre. His style was unique and instantly recognizable." Quite simply, he was one of the all time greats in the world of jazz trombone whose playing had a quality that penetrated to the listener's core. As well, he had a spiritual quality that was almost palpable; it resonated with his fellow musicians and associates. I can't count the number of exams I studied in college while Frank, Shorty, Art Pepper, Gerry, Zoot and others played softly in the background, or how I got myself emotionally psyched listening to the coolest of the cool and their relaxed West Coast sound. But there was something about Frank's sound that was more soulful than the others...more spiritual in nature. Perhaps it was his genius-like ability to improvise fluidly so well........or maybe, just maybe................it had something to do with escaping from certain realities the nature of which only Frank was aware but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Born in Detroit in 1926, Frank Rosolino took up the trombone at age 14 after having studied guitar with his father Gaspar when he was nine. He graduated from Miller High School, while playing in the Cass Tech Symphony Orchestra. Frank was one of a number-of fine jazz musicians to come out of Cass Tech in Detroit, an excellent high school in which only the exceptional could enroll. Donald Byrd and Milt Jackson were others.

Following service in the U.S. Army during World War Two (like so many other great musicians of the 50's), he played for a number of big bands including Glen Gray, Herbie Fields, Gene Krupa, and Tony Pastor. He made his first real mark while playing in the more popular of Stan Kenton's progressive big bands (1952-1954) where he was given great exposure as a soloist. He then settled in Los Angeles and worked with just about anybody who was anybody. Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars in Hermosa Beach, the great Carl Fontana, Jean "Toots" Thielmans, Don Menza, Shelly Manne. While with the All-Stars, he played with other Kenton veterans for a number of years. He recorded often in this period, but rarely as a leader; he was quite upset that "Free for All" (which I am listening to as I write this piece and which he considered his best album), was never released. It has since been released and captures the essence of his music.

The studio scene started for him in Hollywood. Actually, while working at the Lighthouse, he was doing studio work as well working both day and night and enjoying every minute of it. There was a lot of jazz being played on recording sessions and he left himself open for any opportunity that presented itself. Eventually he started getting into motion picture work and live television. He was in the famous Sinatra movie, "The Man With The Golden Arm," with Shorty Rogers' orchestra, and in "The Sweet Smell of Success" staring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtiss. He also did "I Want To Live" starring Susan Hayward; "the score by Johnny Mandel almost made you cry--it was so pretty," said Frank. Interestingly, each of these movies was both an artistic and box office success. He also enjoyed being in the nightclub scenes, in a group with Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer and Shelly Manne. "A lot of times, on these picture calls, they'll take a quick shot of somebody blowing, and that's it, but on this particular picture they really held the camera on the musicians. Well, it won the Academy Award, you know--not because of our appearance on it; it just turned out to be a great movie." He also confessed to having a crush on the beautiful Hayward.

He had a soft way of talking and from all accounts, was the very essence of cool. For me, he was the "Chet Baker" of trombonists; the classic bebop musician that I had come to know through my brother. Many had visted our home in Chicago during the 50's and had their own way of talking.....and their own level of "cool." But his style and his celebrated and perky jokester side may well have hidden a darker side that went totally unnoticed. And this is where the mystery lies. Maybe it had to do with Frank's failed marriages (he had been married three times)......or maybe, to paraphrase author Gene Lees, the heartache of tough financial times combined with the searing frustration of seeing himself and other highly talented and academically trained musicians struggling to make do. And this, while bile-inducing so-called rock stars, touted as "artists," rode around in studio limos with members of their swarmy entourage. I had witnessed this with my brother and though He rarely discussed it, I knew it ate away at his him.......and justifiably so. Indeed, there are so many wonderful and talented musicians who go unappreciated while they are with us.

My brother-in-law, Walt Boenig, out of Las Vegas and an outstanding trombonist in his own right, once related a story about catching Frank, Carl Fontana, Chuck Andrus, Pat Sherrod, and Adelaide Robbins playing at a small club on Eastern and Owens avenues sometime in 1977. He said there were only four patrons in the place but Carl, Frank and the others played like it was packed, like there was no tomorrow, and had a fantastic time doing it. Walt said it was one of those "magical moments" that you get to experinence maybe once or twice in a lifetime. A few years later, Carl mentioned to Walt that he sensed there was another side to Frank but "it just never came to the surface and it was something that you just coundn't put your finger on."

In any event, no one can be exactly certain as to sequence of events that precipitated what happened on November 26, 1978. Surely, when Frank learned that his third wife and mother of his two sons went into their garage, turned on the car's motor, and committed suicide, something must have snapped in his mind. Who knows what her motive could have been. Maybe that Frank was living with another woman, but that is pure speculation. He is reported to have mentioned to friends shortly after hearing this horrific news that he might kill himself as well and take his two boys with him. Apparently, he could not bear the thought of leaving them behind. While seemingly okay a short time later..............he even cracked jokes to his friends as was his wont.........something was going on in the mind of this person who had given the world so much pleasure. Horrible demons were at play and viable options must have been disappearing. As his friend Roger Kellaway said later. "When somebody cracks four jokes a minute, we all should have known there was something wrong."

Frank had declined to go out that evening with his companion, Diane. He waited after she had left and then sometime later, as she was pulling up in her car, went into the bedroom where his two angelic sons,Jason and Justin, were sleeping. He shot each of them in the head. Justin was dead. Jason was not and he underwent immediate and extremely lengthy surgery to save his life. Frank put the final shot into his own brain and died shortly after. The coroner's report indicated there were no significant amounts of alcohol or drugs in Frank's system. Jason survived but was blinded and severely disabled, but that's another story and needs to be told by someone with the necessary literary skills to capture the proper pathos.

No one can become inured to this kind of tragedy. It's difficult enough to try to comprehend the inherent nature of suicide, but to understand making that descision for others is beyond my comprehension. There just is no way to understand the illusion of one's control that the random, sudden and scary nature of death can strip away. I have never achieved resolution regarding this tragedy nor have I attempted to. I will not delude myself by trying to make any sense out of the senseless. Suffice to say we lost an extraordinary virtuoso on the trombone..........one who inspired me with his music......and I would just as soon leave it at that.

As an aside, I recommend the book, "Meet Me at Jim & Andy's: Jazz Musicians and Their World," by Gene Lees, published by Oxford University Press, October 1988, in which the author devotes a marvelously written chapter to Frank.

For all that Las Vegas, you already know the splendor of the Strip. For those who do not, there's nothing else like it. If every hotel to be better against the next one is tried, what you get are sketches of great and wonderful masterpiece. The problem is to choose whatever is best? And 'location, price, star level, shows, and many other things to the bill. Here's my list for you based on the level starWhereas this is for your money based. Anything below 3 stars on the Strip is not worth being down, I do not review.

3 to 3.5 stars

On this level there are many hotels that can be automatically denied. The Riviera is Circus Circus, Imperial, and many others so run down that you are free not to stay there. Others, like the Excalibur and MGM are too extreme position, and it would be terrible to navigate. At this level it isis really only for the Flamingo and Bally, Harrah both properties. In addition to not use fees, many hotels have these days, are both located right in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip. Both hotels are a bit 'dated as you would expect from a lower star hotels. The costs are very similar and both have special offers starting at $ 35 a night off. In the end I chose Bally. The casino is great, the fans of the interior, and the situation is a bit 'better for walking around, and if you slip the clerk a when you check in, you'll most likely get a free upgrade to the new tower, which have significantly better rooms. Also, you're right across the Fountains of Bellagio, a must see in any Las Vegas vacation. Plus you can check out "The Price is Right!"

4 to 4.5 stars

At this level, if cost wasn't a concern, the Caesar's Palace would definitely be the place to be. It's a massive complex of columns and sculptures, fine dining, Pure nightclub, and overall just a wonderful experience. However, it's pricing is more closer to 5 star hotels. With that in mind, I'd have to say the Treasure Island or TI, would be the best hotel at this level with the Mirage coming a close second. With it's triple A, four diamond ratings since 1998, Mystere by Cirque Du Soleil, and the sexy Sirens of TI, why would you want to stay anywhere else? Combine that with the fact that the beds are the most comfortable beds in Las Vegas, and what you get is a fun, relaxing, satisfying hotel room. The rate's here start from about as well, which is quite a bargain for a hotel of this calibre.

At this level, the hotels are a little more difficult to differentiate from. You can automatically negate TheHotel for being way too south, and also remove the one's without casinos such as Vdara and the Trump, and Encore. However, you're still left with some of the best hotels in the world. Aria, being the newest of the bunch, doesn't really have a 5 star feel. It's dark, the rooms are tiny, and overall the hotel and casino are difficult to navigate. The Venetian and Palazzo are basically one hotel as they are interconnected and have the same owners. They, along with the Wynn, are all spectacular hotels, with world class service and amenities, marvelous rooms and suites, but entertainment you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else, but what differentiates the Bellagio from every other hotel is it's location and the Fountains. The buffet is exquisite(although not as good as before), it holds the best Cirque Du Soleil show in "O", and with the Conservatory and Botanical gardens indoor, every turn is a moment to remember. Nothing beats looking out your window, and listening to a classic while watching the Fountains dance in harmony. Try the front desk tip trick and you may get a free upgrade to a fountain view room.

Last month, the Smithsonian magazine included a startling article on a recent survey conducted by Sam Wineburg to the "famous" Americans since the days of Columbus, several presidents and first ladies to be determined. According to a survey of school-age children, six of the most famous women in American and four are African-Americans.

In order, these were the top ten:

4 Susan B. Anthony

7 Oprah Winfrey

At first glance, this is not a list of both the ten most famous Americans or the ten most important Americans. (Mr. Wineburg concluded that he obtained the same results if he had asked participants to call "important" for Americans.) But the survey we learn (or remember) three things.

First, children usually tell adults what they thinkshould. That's why no rappers or wrestlers study the list. Every boy has heard of "diversity" knows that will not go wrong by identifying Martin Luther King or Susan B. Anthony as a person of fame.

Second, political correctness has triumphed in our history lessons. This survey makes it clear that history teachers (now, unfortunately, "social studies" teachers) now give so much time to the most famous women in American history, as are men, and how longAfrican-Americans compared to Caucasians. What is the name of Harriet Tubman to explain in this list? His is a great story, students should know. But who would seriously argue that had more than a very small impact on American history - even the history of abolition? What else can explain the name of a woman aviator best known for failing to fly around the world?

However, my concern with the third lesson I draw from this list: History teachers giveSupremacy for the threads of American history, the struggle for equal rights at the expense of all others.

Where are the pioneers and explorers in this list? No more students do not learn of Lewis and Clark? Or even about Sacagawea? PinkParks was a hero in good faith and a catalyst for the civil rights movement, but what about Revolutionary War catalysts Paul Revere (the midnight rider) or Nathan Hale ("I only regret that I only have one life to give for my country" ). We think that the revolutionary war was not worth much because the Founding Fathers left slavery in place?

Which of the giants of industry and finance like Andrew Carnegie, JP Morgan, Andrew Mellon, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman and John Paul Getty? Ifshould political correctness is de-emphasizing military history in our curriculum, I suppose it will be a surprise if children do not have the men who built modern America is taught. Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, or Leonard Bernstein? Surely Mark Twain, America's greatest writers and the characters of the first order in his time, or Louis Armstrong, the greatest musicians of the jazz world achieved fame enough for this list.

The survey shows, at least, that children learn about scientific and technological achievements of the Americans, with Franklin, Edison, Einstein, and eachWho made the cut.

I visited Havana, hoping to capture the special atmosphere of the fifties, when people like Frank Sinatra and Ernest Hemingway frequented the city and was not disappointed.
